A lovely way to introduce them to our traditions

Monaco celebrated Saint Roman, one of its patron saints. On Sunday 9 August, the Principality paid tribute to its second patron saint during the traditional Saint Roman festival. A dawn serenade, a Mass in Monegasque and a community drinks reception brought together Monegasques and members of the Festival Committee to mark this tradition, which has been upheld since 1868.

As it has done every year since 1868, the Saint-Roman Festival Committee organised the traditional celebrations in honour of the Principality’s second patron saint on Sunday 9 August 2026. A dawn serenade through the streets of the Rock, a Mass in Monegasque at the cathedral and a drinks reception in the Saint-Martin Gardens set the tone for the day.

Early in the morning, around twenty people – mainly committee members joined by a few Monegasques – made their way through the streets of the Rock for the dawn serenade, before heading to the cathedral. Among them was Julien, 38, a Monegasque with a deep attachment to local traditions, who didn’t miss the event: “I love our Monegasque traditions dearly. There’s something very moving about seeing Mass sung in Monegasque.”
